We had planned a trip to Yellowstone and my dream was to see Old Faithful at sunrise. I mentioned it to David a “few” times. We were supposed to go to Old Faithful on our second full day in the park. The evening before he said, “why don’t we go ahead and do our Old Faithful day tomorrow since I know you’re really wanting to see that.” Lost in the excitement of getting to see Old Faithful at sunrise even sooner than we had planned, I happily agreed to his idea. I had ZERO clue about what awaited me.
We left our Airbnb a little after 4am that morning and headed to our destination. When we arrived, the faithful old geyser was going to be erupting in around 15-30 minutes.
Even though there was not much of a crowd, we walked around to the back side of the viewing area. Only one other small family was several feet from us. The geyser started erupting and if you’ve never seen it before…wow! It was one of the most amazing and beautiful things I’ve ever experienced. We were both watching in awe and then….a rainbow appeared. Right in the middle of the geyser. I started jumping up and down screaming, “there’s a rainbow!!” David said, “take a picture!” I got my phone out (I now know he told me to do this so I would be distracted while he got out the ring) and then realized he was getting down on one knee. I turned towards him and he proposed….with Old Faithful still going off….and with a rainbow. It was truly magical and the sweetest, most special proposal. I felt like God was giving us a wink and blessing the beginning of our marriage. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever.
When David proposed, he asked if I’d be his number one ranch hand. This is a joke between us and these were the perfect words. It all made me laugh, cry really hard, jump up and down, and scream with joy.
Old Faithful - what a beautiful symbol of what I hope and pray our marriage will be.
